Sustainable Cruising

Solomons

We anchored near Solomons Island last night, planning to head south again today. After further discussion this morning (and seeing the high temperatures forecast) we decided that we should change our plans. The trek in from the bay was not insignificant, and filled with crab pots, so we thought we might as well visit while we’re already here. The schedule and destinations continue to evolve daily, which is what we ‘planned’, mostly dictated by weather, wind, and whim. Lots of marina options here, but with the heat we were looking for one with a pool! A new luxury for us, and we settled on Spring Cove Marina based on reviews. They were much more than the normal discussions on bathroom cleanliness and wifi. Those were a given. The people coming here were regulars and kept coming back. It’s an oasis of vacation happiness. When it’s 89 degrees outside, and 104 degrees in your house (Daphne), a 24hr pool sure is nice. Solomons also has a wonderful maritime museum, and a nice town as well. This museum encompasses much of the areas history dating back to prehistoric times, as well as many other exhibits, an aquarium, boats, and a lighthouse. Later in the day we met a friendly resident at the marina who shared many of his own prehistoric finds from the Calvert Cliffs. The abundance of fossils is incredible, and he actually gave us two sharks teeth he had found. As with all of our stops so far, very helpful, friendly, and welcoming people.
