Sustainable Cruising

Atlantic Highlands, NJ

We reunited our anchor and our bow roller at 6:15AM, and headed east out of the Metedeconk River. It was a short 4nm to the Point Pleasant Canal, and we timed it to hit minimal opposing current while not arriving at the Rt 35 bridge before 8:00AM. The two lift bridges on the canal operate 24/7, but the Rt 35 bridge only accepts requests 8AM-11PM. The railroad bridge in Manasquan, though normally open, had train traffic that we waited for in both directions. Plenty of boats and wakes in the area had us on our toes as we exited the Manasquan inlet through strong opposing current, as planned. We headed north, into a light north wind, as promised by the forecast. The two day wait was worthwhile, as the conditions remained calm for our journey north and around Sandy Hook. It was a relief to complete the final coastal leg of our trip, but sad to leave the ocean, dolphins, and rays behind. We followed the coast of Sandy Hook down into the bay, and took a mooring at Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club. We found a welcoming group here, and explored the town. It’s a great location, with much to see, and a great view of Manhattan after sundown.
