Sustainable Cruising

Smith Island

We arrived yesterday around 1:30PM, and tied up at one of only two transient slips on the island. Most of the local businesses cater to the day tourists on the ferry boats, so everything here closes at 4PM. We had a short time to rush through the local cultural center and visit both restaurants. This is the first stop we’ve had where you are literally docked next to the boats that bring in the local seafood. We went for a walk in the evening along the main road, which was partially submerged at high tide due to wind and rain. We took off our shoes and walked down the street. Crabs we scurrying around as we walked, and the surrounding salt marsh was filled with birds. This is a very special place. In the evening we spent time with the proprietors of the marina …but I should say bakery/marina/gift shop/campground. The marina is also the Smith Island Bakery, home of the famous Smith Island Cake. A peaceful evening and morning, even with the crabbing and fishing boats headed out in the early hours.
