Sustainable Cruising encompasses many ideals, and probably different things to different people. Our core goal in cruising is to exist as self-sufficiently as possible. From an operational standpoint, this means having the knowledge and skills to maintain and repair our boat and its systems. From a more global perspective, we strive to minimize our resource footprint as well as create as little waste and environmental impact as possible. Unfortunately, cost and practicality are also part of the equation …so there will always be compromises.
Foundations of Sustainability
The People involved need to be committed to their journey and willing to adapt, research, and learn. No one is an expert when they launch into cruising, but success requires the desire and motivation to overcome challenges. Good communication, supportiveness, and shared goals are all key to emotionally sustainable cruising.
The Vessel should be safe, maintainable, and reliable. Our choice was to start with an older sailboat that had a reputation for solid construction. Although in poor condition when we found her, upgrading or replacing nearly all of our boat’s systems has given us the knowledge and confidence that we can maintain her. The larger the boat, the more expensive the overall cost of ownership will be. Choosing a smaller boat has enabled us to have the best chance at financially sustainable cruising.
Realizing Sustainability
Sustainability is a journey, and at the time of this writing, ours is just beginning. No doubt this page will see many updates as we grow and learn as cruisers. The articles we write are all small parts of what makes up the larger picture of our fully realizing these ideas and goals. Please feel free to leave comments and ask questions; we are all here to support, share, and learn.
